In memory of Irwin “Irv” Kotovsky (1930-2022).
Irwin was a 1948 graduate of Allderdice High School and a 1953 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science degree in mining engineering. A member of the US Army Corp of Engineers from 1953-1955, Irwin then began a career in the lighting industry as a manufacturer’s representative in Pittsburgh. In 1964 he switched roles and started a lighting manufacturing company called Architectural Lighting Inc. which would eventually lead to the creation of Modular International, Inc. in 1987.
Irwin’s dedication and knowledge of the lighting industry allowed Modular International to take the world by storm with the creation of the Modular Multiples® family of fixtures in the late 1980’s. During his ownership, Modular International held over 30 US and international lighting patents while providing engineered lighting solutions for prestigious clients around the world. Modular International continues to remain independently owned.
Irwin enjoyed every aspect of being a business owner from his devotion for the Modular Int. employee family to his love of traveling, fine wine, international cuisine, and friends and colleagues around the world who helped him continue his work until his death on November 21, 2022.
